Fall Break

October 8, 2007

Today is the first day of Fall Break, and I couldn’t be more thrilled! I’ve been back at school for seven weeks now, and a break is much appreciated. I don’t have any spectacular plans for the break, just going back to Hennessey and catching up on things.

In my American studies class, we have to read a book about American popular culture and write a six-page paper over it. So I’ll probably spend most of my Fall Break reading, which is my least favorite kind of homework to do. Even if I’m interested in the topic, I always seem to fall asleep; let’s hope that doesn’t happen this time.

The break comes at a good time because last week wore me out. I found myself up at 3 a.m. multiple mornings in a row, which probably could have been avoided, but I like to work into the early morning hours because I seem to get a lot more done. I think it’s because most people are asleep, and I have no interruptions. Last week, I had a test on Tuesday, 17 language notebooks to be graded for media style and structure by Wednesday and a paper due on Thursday. Throw in two meetings for my student organizations, and my schedule was pretty full.

Overall, I had a wonderful week. I think my test went well, the grades for the language notebook were better than I expected and although I wrote the paper the night before, I was able to find all of the sources I needed to put together a comprehensive, well-written analysis. However, the most exciting thing about my week was my Public Relations Student Society of America meeting. One of our major goals for this year is increasing active membership. We are trying out some new things to encourage this, and I was eager to see if they had made any difference at all. Our second general meeting was on Thursday night at the Hideaway, and we had record attendance! Our adviser was a little worried considering it was the Thursday before Fall Break, but who doesn’t love Hideaway pizza?!

To celebrate this success, I went to Theta Rocks the CASA, which is Kappa Alpha Theta sorority’s annual concert to raise money for its philanthropy: The Payne County Court Appointed Special Advocate Association (CASA). I bought a ticket because my roommate is a Theta, it’s a lot of fun and it’s such a great cause. CASAs are trained volunteers who are an aide to children going through the court system, making sure each child gets a safe home. Last year, Theta Rocks the CASA raised $13,000 so I’m excited to see how much was raised this year.

Time flies by so fast. I can’t believe it’s already Fall Break, and I only have about 2 ½ months before the end of the semester! I love college life because there is so much variety. Yeah, you go to the same classes every week, but each day is different from the one before. Classes alternate, assignments change and you never know what’s going to happen during all of your free time. I worry that once I get a job, being in the same office every day and having the same schedule might be a hard adjustment to make. I know my dad is always telling me, “College is the best time of your life, so enjoy it while you can.” I’m not sure if that’s true yet, considering I haven’t experienced life after college, but I am trying to enjoy every second of it!

I had my roommate take a picture of me
grading all my notebooks.
Just look at all of them!

Just some of the smiling faced at the
Hideaway for our PRSSA meeting.
Bonnie Cain, who works for the OSU Library,
spoke to us about the importance of ethics.
This is Kyle and I before the concert.
I would have pictures at the concert,
but I forgot my camera.
