Goodbye October

November 5, 2007

Another month is gone. It’s insane how fast this year is going! I thought because my schedule was slowing down so would the passage of time, but I was wrong. My favorite month came and went far too quickly. I like October for several reasons: it’s the beginning of fall, pumpkins are everywhere and Halloween is one of the best holidays (behind Christmas, of course).

Even though September is the official beginning of fall, I don’t recognize it because nothing happens in September. It isn’t until October that things start getting interesting. OSU’s already beautiful campus transforms into something truly amazing in the fall. The leaves change to the prettiest shades of orange and yellow that I’ve ever seen, and the weather is perfect for walking to class.

I can remember one day crossing campus with a friend of mine on our way to Spanish when the wind picked up, stirring the leaves on the ground and causing more to fall from the trees. All of the sudden, leaves were circling us, falling like snow. It was as if we were in a movie. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that because it’s one of the most perfect moments I’ve had at OSU.

Another thing I like about the fall semester at OSU is band practice. I am not, nor have I ever been in the band, but I enjoy hearing it play as I walk to my car in the evenings. The band practices on library lawn, and there are always a couple of people just standing there watching and listening. Once football is over, the library lawn practices stop, and I’m always a little disappointed.

People can hardly go anywhere this time of year without running into a pumpkin. I’m a sucker for pumpkins, and I’m not exactly sure why that is. Yes, they’re orange, and although I think every true OSU fan loves that color, there’s more to it than that. Pumpkin carving is a tradition in my family. I have three siblings, and when we were little, our mom would leave us with dad one night a month so she could go to Mother’s Club. We had so much fun playing games and watching TV with him, but in October, it was different. We carved a pumpkin…well, dad carved it, we mainly watched. Over the years, the tradition stuck, and we still do it today even though we’re getting old.

I suppose that’s one of the reasons why I like Halloween so much. This year, I didn’t get to thoroughly enjoy the holiday because I had a test! However, my roommate and I were able to get out of the house for a couple of hours that evening. We had a lot of fun seeing all the crazy costumes. My favorite was the girl who dressed up like Twister, wearing a dotted dress that looked like the mat and a spinner on her head. I wish I was more creative.

I’m a little sad Halloween is over, but that just means we’re one step closer to Christmas. That’s so much like life. We spend our time living for the next big thing, and once it’s here, we’re ready to move on to something else. I help plan events and meetings for my organizations, and I always feel like I’m living at least two weeks ahead of the calendar. So this week, I’m going to try to live in the present and enjoy each day as it comes because before I know it, November will be nothing more than a memory.

  The prettiest tree on campus!
I never realized how big the band was until I saw them on library lawn. I couldn’t even fit half of them in this picture.
Because the weather was so nice, Kyle took me to the zoo for our anniversary. My favorite part was the swan paddle boats.
The gang with our pumpkins. Left to right: Kyle, Zach, Ty, Lisa (Ty’s girlfriend), me, Josh (Stacy’s husband) and Stacy.
