Summer Happenings

August 17, 2009

Another school year is about to begin, which means another Blog!! I'm so excited to be the lucky Scholar Blogger this year. It will be a privilege to share my experiences and passion for OSU with others.

I'll tell you a little about myself before I begin with the rest of the blog. My name is Sara Robers, and I'm a Sophomore majoring in Graphic Design, minoring in Entrepreneurship and Business Development. I love OSU. Being heavily involved in organizations on campus keeps me on my toes, and I like being busy. My family is very important to me. I thoroughly enjoy listening to music, and almost always have my ipod. My other hobbies are running, being outdoors, any sport for leisure, swimming, drawing, and taking pictures. I try to be true to myself and maintain a positive attitude in every situation.

Now to the events of this past summer. For the most part, (May through early August) I worked at the Farmers Coop Exchange in Weatherford, OK. My work entails secretarial duties before and after harvest, and I work in the scale house during harvest. Some people may know everything about the harvesting of crops and the business that a coop does. Others, however, may not; so I'll briefly explain my involvement with harvest. Basically, when a truck comes from the field with a load of wheat, it's weighed on scales, the wheat is tested for various factors that determine how much the farmer makes on that load and then they take the wheat to one of the pits to be dumped. The wheat is then taken up on belts to the top of the elevator. Usually coops are the tallest buildings in small towns. Anyway...I test the wheat and weigh the trucks in and out. Here's a picture of the Coop and the yellow probe that's used to obtain the sample of wheat that is tested. This was the fourth summer I've worked there, and it's truly made me appreciate a lot of things that I hadn't been aware of previously.

I got to attend a great concert at the Diamond Ballroom in July! Gomez and the Republic Tigers played - it was amazing!!

The most eventful part of my summer occurred recently when my mom and I took a trip to visit my brother in Hutchinson, Minnesota. On our way back we stopped in St. Louis, Missouri for a couple days to see my uncle.

Clay, my brother, is an OSU graduate and now an engineer for 3M in MN. He hasn't picked up too much of a northern accent, except for sayings like “Ya you betcha” and “Uff-da” . He's renting a house on a lake and we really enjoyed our time there. There were numerous interesting attractions in the area that we attended that I had never experienced before, such as toilet bowl races, a demolition derby with combines, and the largest ball of twine made by one man. Here are some pictures from those entertaining events.

Ball of Twine: Darwin, MN.

Now we were on to St. Louis! I was fortunate enough to see the Arch, the Cathedral Basilica, and the new Citygarden all in the short time that we were there. We went up into the Arch and the views from the top were great!

The Citygarden in downtown St. Louis was no ordinary garden. It was blooming with sculptures and they were all incredible!! This was definitely a great day of sightseeing.

The Cathedral Basilica was truly magnificent. It reminded me of being in Europe. Almost every inch of the structure is a portrait of mosaic tiles - it was absolutely incredible.

It was definitely an exciting trip. I was ready to get back and head to OSU though! Which is good because I had two days to pack and then I was back in Stillwater!! The next day I got to help ALPHA participants move in, which was a great way to meet new people! Here's a picture of Melanie and I, she was also helping with ALPHA.

My summer was an enjoyable one with lots of good times and interesting experiences, but I'm so glad to be back at OSU and very ready to get back into a routine! Tomorrow is the first day of class, so I guess ready or not, here comes another year at Oklahoma State!
