Service, Inspiration, Engagement.

August 31, 2009

This week was definitely a test of my time management skills. And I'm a little rusty, (haha) but it all turned out well and made for an eventful, exhilarating week.

Wednesday was the Activities Mart on Library Lawn, which always brings a lively crowd, music, and people getting involved! I represented Circle K International at their booth, for part of the event, after my morning classes. We passed out TV Guides that listed the local cable channels, since most students aren't familiar with them yet; I know I'm still not! They went quickly, and we had a fairly good turn out at our first meeting the next day.

Lights on Stillwater was one of my favorite memories from last year and this year's was certainly no different. Especially because I not only attended, but I also passed out (or threw) t-shirts and sunglasses at the OSU Student Foundation booth. The attendees loved the shirts and sunglasses - they were gone in no time! I never knew giving away free stuff could be so fun . On Friday, the day after Lights on Stillwater, I was excited to already see a few people sporting the orange and black sunglasses with the OSU Student Foundation logo on the side! Here's a picture of me and Rebekah Spaulding, a fellow OSU Student Foundation member, passing out t-shirts and sunglasses.

Circle K International is a worldwide collegiate service organization sponsored by Kiwanis International. We are separated into divisions based on our location for the purpose of meetings, etc.  Saturday, the 29th, Kiwanis had there quarterly Division Council Meeting here in Stillwater. So our Kiwanis Adviser, Carlene Campbell, invited us to attend as well. The Stillwater Kiwanis Club always supports our activities one hundred percent, and it truly is a joy to work with such wonderful people. On Saturday we saw familiar faces as well as others that traveled from surrounding areas. I love Kiwanians!

Following the meeting, we changed clothes and met a few other CKIers at Richmond Road for “Adopt-A-Street.” We get a group together about twice a semester and clean up the roadside…in very attractive neon vests I might add! It always ends up being a pretty fun time, good exercise, and you're always surprised by the things you find, haha. This is a picture of us after we finished “Adopt-A-Street.”

Sunday was just what I needed after a somewhat hectic week. Although it too was a busy day, I always feel so blessed to participate in opportunities that reiterate my values; events that highlight the importance of service to others, leadership, engagement, honor, and scholarship never cease to inspire. The National Society of Collegiate Scholars induction was the 30th, and there's no doubt that it promises to provide experiences I'm sure will enrich my undergraduate career. I was also fortunate enough to hear Vice President of Student Affairs, Lee Bird, deliver the keynote address. She is such a genuine person, whose stories and character are truly moving. Here's a picture from the event.

After the induction I was off to the 4th Annual Scholars Round Up at the Alumni Center, for the President's Distinguished Scholarship Program. Also a great memory from last year - it's always fun to meet and mingle with new people, as well as catching up with people I don't get a chance to see often.  Here's a picture of a group of us filling out thank you notes and me with a miniature Pistol Pete!

Every day as an OSU Cowboy my horizons are broadened by the extensive opportunities that are available. With a refreshed insight, I'm looking forward to the challenges that this week has to offer.
